American War Memorial: A Testament to Comradeship

The American War Memorial, also referred to as the Naval Monument at Gibraltar or the American Steps, stands as a powerful symbol of the alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom during World War I. Erected by the American Battle Monuments Commission and inaugurated in 1937, the memorial is built into the Line Wall Curtain, a part of Gibraltar's main city wall. The monument commemorates the achievements and camaraderie of the American and British navies in the waters near Gibraltar during the Great War. The United States entered World War I on April 6, 1917, and the American Expeditionary Forces relied on sea transport, which was threatened by German submarines. The U.S. Navy cooperated with the Royal Navy to combat this threat, using Gibraltar as a major base. The memorial features a masonry archway constructed from stone from the Rock of Gibraltar. Above the arch are two bronze medallions depicting the seals of the United States and the Department of the Navy. The inscription on the monument reads: "Erected by the United States of America to commemorate the achievements and comradeship of the American and British navies in this vicinity during the World War". Steps from the monument lead down to the harbor, giving it the nickname "American Steps". Today, the American War Memorial stands as a serene place for reflection, honoring the valor and sacrifices of American military personnel. Plaques and inscriptions detail the contributions of American forces throughout various conflicts, serving as a reminder of the past and a symbol of enduring cooperation between the United States and Gibraltar.
