Discover more about Europa Point Lighthouse

Europa Point Lighthouse, also known as the Trinity Lighthouse, is perched at the very edge of Gibraltar, overseeing the busy Strait. Constructed in 1841 by Trinity House, it has been a crucial aid to navigation for ships passing between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The lighthouse stands 20 meters tall, its white tower punctuated by a broad red band, making it a striking landmark. Its light can be seen for over 32 kilometers. Originally lit with a single wick oil lamp, it underwent several upgrades throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, including the introduction of more powerful burners and eventually an electric system. The lighthouse was fully automated in 1994, but it still retains a lighthouse keeper, and remains the only Trinity House operated lighthouse outside of the British Isles. Today, Europa Point Lighthouse is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the grounds, take in the stunning views, and learn about the lighthouse's history. Nearby attractions include the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe, and the Sikorski Memorial. Europa Point offers a unique vantage point to witness the meeting of two great bodies of water and, on clear days, to see the African coastline.
