Discover more about O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery, located at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar, offers visitors a unique blend of military history and breathtaking scenery. Named after General Charles O'Hara, Governor of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, the battery stands on the site of what was once known as "O'Hara's Folly," an unsuccessful attempt to build a watchtower to monitor the port of Cadiz. Constructed in 1890, the battery was a crucial part of Gibraltar's coastal defense system. Its strategic position provided commanding views over the Strait of Gibraltar, allowing for the protection of the territory and its naval base. The battery housed large artillery guns, capable of delivering long-range fire, acting as a deterrent to enemy ships. The current 9.2 inch Mark X BL gun, installed in 1901, had a range of 16 miles (25.7 kms). In theory, it could strike targets across the Strait of Gibraltar, reaching the African shore. Visitors can explore the well-preserved gun emplacements, observation points, and underground chambers that once housed ammunition stores and living quarters for the soldiers. The site provides insights into the battery's construction, armament, and its significance in Gibraltar's defense strategy. The gun was last fired during training exercises in 1976. Since May 2010, the Government of Gibraltar opened O'Hara's Battery to the public. O'Hara's Battery represents an important link to Gibraltar's identity. The Rock has long stood as a symbol of resilience, strength, and perseverance, and O'Hara's Battery embodies these qualities.
