Getting There

  • Bus

    From the city center, take bus line 2 or 10 towards Europa Point. Get off at the 'Europa Rd - Elliot's Battery' bus stop, which is the closest to Harding's Battery. From there, it's approximately a 6-minute walk to the battery. A single bus fare is approximately £2.20.

  • Walking

    From the Rock Hotel, head southeast along the coastal path towards Europa Point. The walk takes around 30 minutes, offering scenic views. Upon reaching Europa Point, follow the signs to Harding's Battery.

  • Car

    From Queen's Road, head southwest towards the roundabout and take the second exit onto Winston Churchill Avenue. Continue to the A2, turn left, and follow signs for Punta Europa. Take the exit towards Punta Europa and follow signs to Harding's Battery. Parking is limited near the battery. Expect to pay for parking in the Europa Point Car Park.

Harding's Battery, perched at Europa Point, stands as a testament to Gibraltar's strategic military history. Named in 1844 after Sir George Harding, the Chief Engineer of Gibraltar, the battery occupies the site of the earlier 7th Europa Battery.Originally constructed in 1859, the battery initially housed two 24-pounder cannons, upgraded in 1863 to two 32-pounders. Following a review by Colonel William Jervois in 1868, the battery was modified to accommodate heavy Rifle Muzzle Loading (RML) guns. In 1877, reconstruction began to install a 12.5 inch RML on a barbette mounting, completed in 1878. The 12.5 inch RML gun that is seen at Harding's Battery today was originally used at Alexandra's Battery back in the 1870's.For years, Harding's Battery was neglected and buried under sand until a restoration project began in 2010 as part of a broader effort to renovate Europa Point. The Europa Sunken Magazine, located beneath the gun emplacement, has been transformed into a visitor center, offering insights into the battery's history and the surrounding area. Today, visitors can explore the restored battery, examine the massive artillery piece, and enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the African coastline.
