Skywalk Gibraltar: A Walk on the Edge

The Skywalk Gibraltar is a state-of-the-art glass platform that extends from the summit of the Rock of Gibraltar, offering visitors a breathtaking and unique experience. Opened in 2018, the Skywalk quickly became one of Gibraltar's most popular attractions, providing 360-degree panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the North African coast. Mark Hamill, best known as Luke Skywalker, inaugurated the Skywalk with his lightsaber, adding a touch of Hollywood glamour to the opening ceremony.Standing 340 meters (1,115 feet) above sea level, higher than the tallest point of London's Shard, the Skywalk is built on the foundations of a former WWII military base. The structure is engineered to withstand wind speeds of over 150 km/hour and can support the weight of 5 Asian elephants or 340 people. The glass platform is made of four layers of tempered glass, each capable of supporting 600kg, ensuring safety and stability for all visitors.The Skywalk not only offers stunning views but also provides informative panels detailing the geology, flora, fauna, and historical significance of the Rock of Gibraltar. It connects to other attractions within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, including the Windsor Suspension Bridge and the Apes' Den, via a series of walking trails. From this vantage point, visitors can appreciate the strategic importance of Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory since 1713, and its role as a military outpost. The Rock also features an extensive tunnel system built by the British Armed Forces, expanded during World War II to accommodate 16,000 men and essential amenities.
