Discover more about Cradle of History

The Cradle of History monument serves as a striking reminder of Gibraltar's rich and complex past. Located near the Gibraltar International Airport, this monument marks a site where layers of history converge, from prehistoric habitation to its strategic importance in more recent times. Gibraltar has been inhabited for over 50,000 years, with evidence suggesting it was one of the last regions occupied by Neanderthals. The discovery of the 'Gibraltar Skull' in 1848, predating the finds in Germany's Neander Valley, underscores the peninsula's significance in understanding human evolution. This monument is a tribute to that deep history, as well as to Gibraltar's role as one of the Pillars of Hercules in ancient times. Throughout the centuries, control of Gibraltar has shifted between various powers, including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors. The Moors held sway for over 700 years, leaving an indelible mark on the territory's culture and architecture. In 1704, Gibraltar was captured by Anglo-Dutch forces during the War of the Spanish Succession and was later ceded to Great Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. Its strategic location has made it a coveted prize and a key naval base, especially during the 19th and 20th centuries. The Cradle of History invites visitors to reflect on these layers of civilization and the enduring legacy of Gibraltar as a crossroads of cultures and a sentinel of the Mediterranean.
