Discover more about Gibraltar War Memorial

The Gibraltar War Memorial, a solemn tribute to those who fell during the First World War, is located west of Line Wall Road in Gibraltar. Sculpted by Jose Piquet Catoli of Barcelona, Spain, the monument was unveiled on September 27, 1923. The Carrara marble sculpture depicts a sailor and a soldier standing side-by-side, holding up the British flag and a laurel wreath. The memorial stands on an esplanade with steps, featuring several plaques dedicated to the heroes of Gibraltar and the Straits Patrol. One plaque commemorates the construction of the esplanade in 1921 under the governorship of General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien. Another tablet is dedicated by Belgium to the Fortress of Gibraltar in recognition of the support given to Belgians during World War II. Adjacent to the memorial are two Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War (1854–1856) and presented to Gibraltar by the British government in 1858. The memorial serves as a place for reflection and remembrance, honoring the courage and sacrifice of those who served.
