Grand Casemates Square: Gibraltar's Lively Heart

Experience the vibrant heart of Gibraltar at Grand Casemates Square: history, dining, shopping, and entertainment converge in this bustling plaza.

Grand Casemates Square, colloquially known as Casemates Square, is a bustling public square located at the northern end of Main Street in Gibraltar. This lively area serves as the main gateway into Gibraltar's city center, drawing both tourists and locals with its array of shops, restaurants, and bars. The square's history dates back to Gibraltar's Moorish period when the area was first fortified. In 1160, Moroccan settlers established a settlement here, recognizing the beach as an ideal location for bringing in boats for repairs. Over the centuries, the square has undergone numerous transformations, reflecting the changing rulers and purposes of Gibraltar. Under Spanish control in the 15th century, the area was part of the old town, enclosed by walls, gates, and towers. Due to unstable ground, many of the Spanish-built structures began to sink and were later demolished. After the Great Siege of 1779-1783, the British decided to level the square to create space for public events and military parades. The Grand Casemates, a bombproof barracks, was constructed in 1817, giving the square its current name. Historically, Grand Casemates Square was also the site of public executions until 1864. Today, the square is a commercial and social hub, hosting cultural events, live concerts, and National Day celebrations. Archaeological excavations in the 1990s uncovered the foundations of a 14th-century galley house, which are now preserved for public viewing.
