The Gibraltar Tourist Information Office is located in the heart of Gibraltar, within the historic Main Guard building on John Mackintosh Square. This office serves as the central hub for tourists seeking information, maps, brochures, and personalized recommendations for exploring Gibraltar. The knowledgeable staff can provide insights into the Rock of Gibraltar, local culture, historical sites, and various attractions. The Main Guard building itself has a rich history. References to the building date back to the mid-18th century when John Mackintosh Square was used as a parade ground and was known as The Parade. The building is labeled as “Main Guard Room” on a plan from 1750. It is believed that the building was severely damaged during the Great Siege. The second story was likely added during reconstruction. The building was used as a Guard House until 1911, and between the two World Wars, it served as the City Fire Station. After World War II, it was briefly a public bathhouse before becoming government offices. The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has been located in the Main Guard since 2001. John Mackintosh Square, where the Tourist Information Office is located, has been the center of city life since the 14th century. Known as Plaza Mayor during the Spanish period, it was later called The Parade by the British. In 1940, the square was officially named John Mackintosh Square after a local philanthropist. Today, the square is a bustling public space and a focal point for many of Gibraltar's key buildings and events.
