Discover more about Grand Battery

Grand Battery, an iconic historical landmark in Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's rich military heritage. As the main battery of the Landport Defences, it was one of the largest batteries in Gibraltar. Its origins trace back to the Moorish occupation, possibly as early as the 14th century. The battery has been modified and improved upon throughout the centuries. Over the years, Grand Battery has undergone significant changes. In 1627, it was reinforced, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, the British further developed it as part of Gibraltar's coastal defense system. The battery was equipped with heavy artillery to protect Gibraltar and its naval base. Today, visitors can explore well-preserved artillery emplacements, barracks, and other military structures. Grand Battery offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline. Informative plaques detail the site's historical significance, providing insights into the lives of the soldiers who once manned the fortifications. The site is located near other attractions such as the Gibraltar Fine Arts Gallery and the North Bastion. Recent restoration work has further enhanced the site, with the removal of a WWII blast wall revealing hidden 18th-century fire steps.
