As the main battery of the Landport Defences, it was one of the largest batteries in Gibraltar. Its origins trace back to the Moorish occupation, possibly as early as the 14th century. The battery has been modified and improved upon throughout the centuries.Over the years, Grand Battery has undergone significant changes. In 1627, it was reinforced, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, the British further developed it as part of Gibraltar's coastal defense system. The battery was equipped with heavy artillery to protect Gibraltar and its naval base. Today, visitors can explore well-preserved artillery emplacements, barracks, and other military structures.Grand Battery offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding coastline. Informative plaques detail the site's historical significance, providing insights into the lives of the soldiers who once manned the fortifications. The site is located near other attractions such as the Gibraltar Fine Arts Gallery and the North Bastion.     Getting There

    Walking

    From Casemates Square, head north towards the Landport Gates. Pass through the gates and continue along Corral Road. Grand Battery will be on your left, approximately a 5-minute walk from the Landport Gates.

    Public Transport

    Take bus number 3 or 4 from any bus stop along Queen's Road. Get off at the 'Corral Road' stop. Walk approximately 5 minutes northeast along Corral Road. Grand Battery will be directly ahead. Bus fare is approximately £1.50.

    Car

    From Queen's Road, head southeast towards Main Street. Continue onto the A1 road and follow signs for 'Corral Road'. Take the exit towards Corral Road. Continue on Corral Road for about 300 meters. Grand Battery is located on your left at 1 Corral Rd. Parking may be limited. Check for parking restrictions.
