Grand Casemates Square: Gibraltar's Lively Heart

Grand Casemates Square, colloquially known as Casemates Square, stands as the heart of Gibraltar, blending history, culture, and modern vibrancy. Located at the northern end of Main Street, this bustling square serves as the main entry point into Gibraltar's city center for most tourists.The square's history dates back to Gibraltar's Moorish period when the area was first fortified. It was once a beach where the first Moroccan settlers landed. Over the centuries, it has been under Spanish and British control, each leaving their mark on the area. In the past, Grand Casemates Square was used for public events, military parades, and even public executions. The last public military hanging was held in 1864.Today, Grand Casemates Square is a commercial hub with numerous pubs, bars, restaurants, and shops. Refurbished in the 1990s, it replaced a car park and has since become a popular spot for socializing and relaxation. The square hosts various cultural events, from live open-air concerts to National Day celebrations. Visitors can explore the historic Grand Casemates, a bombproof barracks built by the British in 1817, which gives the square its name.Archaeological finds in the 1990s revealed remains of a 14th-century galley house, showcasing the area's rich history. A statue of a Gibraltar Defence Force soldier commemorates the regiment's dedication. The square also features a Koehler depression gun carriage, a unique weapon used during the Great Siege of Gibraltar.
