Discover more about Southport Gates

The Southport Gates stand as a powerful reminder of Gibraltar's rich and layered past. These three city gates are embedded within the Charles V Wall, a 16th-century fortification that once marked the southern boundary of the city. Located near Trafalgar Cemetery and between the South and Flat Bastions, the gates offer a glimpse into the evolving strategic importance of Gibraltar. The oldest of the three, the Southport Gate (also known as Africa Gate), dates back to 1552. Commissioned during the reign of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, it features his royal arms and the coat of arms of Gibraltar. The New Southport Gate was added in 1883 during Queen Victoria's reign to ease traffic flow. It bears the arms of both Queen Victoria and the Governor of Gibraltar at the time, General Sir John Miller Adye. The widest of the three, Referendum Gate, was constructed in 1967 and commemorates the 1967 referendum in which Gibraltarians voted to remain British.Walking through these gates is more than just a physical passage; it's a journey through time, offering insight into Gibraltar's strategic significance and the craftsmanship of different eras.
