Discover more about American War Memorial

The American War Memorial, formally known as the Naval Monument at Gibraltar, is a poignant reminder of the strong naval alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom during World War I. Erected in 1933 by the American Battle Monuments Commission, the memorial is integrated into the historic Line Wall Curtain, near the northern end of Line Wall Road. This monument commemorates the achievements and comradeship of the American and British navies in the waters around Gibraltar during the First World War. The United States entered the war on April 6, 1917, and the American Expeditionary Forces relied heavily on sea transport. German submarines posed a significant threat, destroying millions of tons of Allied shipping. The U.S. Navy collaborated with the Royal Navy to combat this threat, using Gibraltar as a major base. The Navy's Patrol Force operated from Gibraltar from August 1917 until after the Armistice, escorting convoys and attacking German submarines. The memorial itself is a masonry archway constructed from stone sourced from the Rock of Gibraltar. Above the arch are two bronze seals representing the United States and the Department of the Navy. The steps leading down from the monument towards the harbor gave it the nickname "American Steps". In 1998, a bronze plaque was added to commemorate Operation Torch, the World War II Allied invasion of North Africa, further cementing the site's historical significance.Today, the American War Memorial stands as a symbol of enduring cooperation and sacrifice. Visitors can reflect on the shared history of the two nations and appreciate the strategic importance of Gibraltar during times of conflict.
