Discover more about Charles V Wall

The Charles V Wall, originally called Muralla de San Benito (St. Benedict's Wall), is a significant part of Gibraltar's fortifications. Built in 1540 and strengthened in 1552 during the reign of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, it was designed to defend against attacks, particularly from Barbary pirates. In September 1540, Gibraltar was attacked by corsairs, leading to the construction of the wall to protect The Rock from future assaults. The wall extends from the South Bastion, once at the water's edge, to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. The lower section runs to Prince Edward's Gate, while the upper section zigzags up the slope, allowing defenders to provide flanking fire. Over the centuries, the wall has been improved by military engineers like Giovanni Battista Calvi and Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino. Today, the Charles V Wall is well-preserved, with a handrail for visitors to walk its entirety. Walking along the wall provides panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscapes.
