Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Main Street, head north towards the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. Continue past the gardens, following the road as it ascends. As you walk along Green Lane, you'll notice the path gradually incline. Follow the signs for Devil's Gap Battery, which will lead you to the entrance. The walk is moderately steep and takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Remember to wear comfortable shoes.

  • Public Transport

    From the city center, take bus number 2 or 3 towards the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Get off at the bus stop closest to the Nature Reserve entrance. From there, follow the signs for Devil's Gap Battery by walking up Green Lane. The battery is approximately a 15-minute walk from the bus stop. A single bus ticket costs approximately £1.60-£1.80. Consider purchasing a day hopper ticket for £6.00 for unlimited travel.

  • Taxi

Constructed in the late 19th century, the battery was a key component of British defenses. Perched at 130 meters (430 ft) above sea level, it offered a strategic vantage point over the Bay of Gibraltar.During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), the site was initially used to mount mortars. Over the years, the battery was upgraded with various artillery pieces, including RML 9-inch guns and BL 6-inch Mk VII naval guns. In August 1917, one of the guns saw action, sinking a German submarine during World War I. The battery continued to serve as a coastal defense until 1954.Today, Devil's Gap Battery is maintained by volunteers on behalf of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and is a Class A listed building. Visitors can explore the well-preserved gun emplacements, imagine its military significance, and enjoy panoramic views. The surrounding area offers walking trails, inviting further exploration of Gibraltar's natural beauty. Recent plans aim to enhance the visitor experience, transforming the battery into a functional hub with improved amenities.
