    Gibraltar City Hall, located on the west side of John Mackintosh Square, is a significant landmark with a rich history. Constructed in 1819 by Aaron Cardozo, a wealthy merchant, the building initially served as his private residence. Cardozo, a friend of Lord Nelson, received special permission to build the mansion despite restrictions on property ownership for non-Protestants. The building replaced the old hospital and chapel of La Santa Misericordia.The City Hall's architecture reflects the Regency style, with a symmetrical facade. Over the years, the building has undergone several transformations. After Cardozo's death, it became the Club House Hotel, hosting distinguished guests. In 1922, the Gibraltar colonial authorities acquired the property and later converted it into the City Hall.Today, the City Hall houses the Mayor's office and, since 2023, serves as the Registry of Marriages. Visitors can also explore the Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery, which showcases works by Gibraltarian artists. John Mackintosh Square, where the City Hall is located, has been the center of city life since the 14th century and is a vibrant public space with gardens, sculptures, and cafes.
