Discover more about Gibraltar War Memorial

The Gibraltar War Memorial, a prominent landmark in Gibraltar, commemorates the Gibraltarians who fell during the First World War. Situated west of Line Wall Road, at the intersection of Winston Churchill Avenue and Devil's Tower Road, the memorial provides a space for locals and visitors to reflect on the sacrifices made during the Great War. The monument, sculpted by Jose Piquet Catoli of Barcelona, Spain, was constructed using Carrara marble and features a sailor and a soldier holding up the national flag and a laurel wreath. It was unveiled on September 27, 1923, by the Governor of Gibraltar, Sir Charles Monro. The esplanade where the memorial stands was constructed in 1921. Plaques on the esplanade and the base of the monument pay tribute to the Gibraltarian citizens and the officers and seamen of the Gibraltar Straits Patrol who lost their lives. A tablet also acknowledges Belgium's gratitude to Gibraltar for welcoming Belgians fleeing occupied Europe during World War II. Adjacent to the memorial are two Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War, which were gifted to Gibraltar by the British government in 1858 in recognition of its assistance during the conflict. The Gibraltar War Memorial is not the only war memorial in Gibraltar. The American War Memorial, built in 1933, commemorates the alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom in their naval exploits during World War I.
