Getting there

Walking

Assuming you are already within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, follow the main path towards the Apes' Den. From there, continue along the marked trails, following signs for Governor's Lookout Battery. The walk is uphill and takes about 30-40 minutes from Queen's Road. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Public Transport

Take a bus that services the Gibraltar Nature Reserve. The bus will take you to the entrance of the reserve. From the bus stop, walk approximately 10 minutes up a steep path to reach the battery. Bus routes to look for are those heading towards 'Main Street' or 'Casemates'. A single bus fare is approximately £2.20.

Taxi

Hire a taxi from various points in Gibraltar. Ask the driver to take you to Governor's Lookout Battery within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. A taxi ride from the city center will cost approximately £15-£20. Ensure the taxi is aware of the location to avoid confusion.

Overview

Perched high within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, Governor's Lookout Battery is a testament to Gibraltar's strategic military importance throughout history. This site, likely used as an observation point by Governor General George Augustus Eliott during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779–83), offers commanding views of the Bay of Gibraltar and the Spanish coastline.Originally armed with a single 9-inch rifled muzzle-loading gun (RML) in 1886, the battery was later upgraded with a 9.2-inch breech-loading gun. By the early 1900s, plans were in place to mount four 9.2-inch guns, but only one Mk X gun on a Mk V mounting was installed. The last gun was removed in 1940 during World War II. The battery's underground works included a magazine and cartridge store.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved structures and imagine the site's pivotal role in defending Gibraltar. The battery is now used as a Scout camp. The site offers a tranquil environment with breathtaking vistas, ideal for photography, picnicking, or simply soaking in the views. Informational plaques detail the battery's history and significance.
