    Discover more about Grand Battery

Grand Battery, the main battery of the Landport Defences, has been one of the largest batteries in Gibraltar. This strategic defensive wall's origins possibly trace back to the early 14th century during the Moorish era. The battery, known as La Muralla de San Bernardo (St. Bernard's Wall) during the Spanish period, was adapted to mount cannons. The old Moorish archery towers were replaced by bastions.Throughout history, the Grand Battery has undergone significant enhancements. In 1627, improvements were made following a report by Don Luis Bravo de Acuña. By the 18th century, the platform wall was broadened to accommodate better artillery, holding fourteen guns by 1727 and seventeen 18-pounders by 1762. The Grand Battery saw action during the Thirteenth Siege (1727) and the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783).In later years, the ditch in front of the Grand Battery was filled and used by the Gibraltar Construction Training Centre. A building on top of the battery served as the Parcel Post Office and now houses the Officers Mess of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment. In 2019, WWII blast walls and pillboxes were removed, revealing eighteenth-century fire steps. Today, the Grand Battery stands as a monument to Gibraltar's military heritage, offering visitors panoramic views and a tangible link to the past.
