Located at the northern end of Main Street, this bustling square serves as the main entry point into Gibraltar's city center for tourists and locals alike.Originally a beach used by the Moors to beach their galleys, the square dates back to Gibraltar's Moorish period. Over the centuries, it has evolved through Spanish and British rule, witnessing significant events and transformations. In the 15th century, under Spanish control, the area was part of the old town, Villa Vieja, enclosed by walls, gates, and towers. After facing damage and instability, the British demolished most of the structures after the Great Siege of 1779-1783.The square got its name from the Grand Casemates, bombproof barracks built by the British in 1817. Public executions were held here until 1864.In the 1990s, Grand Casemates Square was refurbished, transforming it from a car park into a commercial hub.
