The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, often called Gibraltar Cathedral, is located in Cathedral Square and serves as the cathedral for the Church of England Diocese in Europe. It is a striking example of Moorish Revival architecture, characterized by its prominent horseshoe arches, an architectural style inspired by the period of Moorish control in Gibraltar's history. The cathedral's story began in the early 19th century when John Pitt, the Earl of Chatham and Governor of Gibraltar, recognized the need for a dedicated Anglican church for the civilian population, as the King's Chapel was primarily for military use. Construction started in 1825 and was completed in 1832, though the original architect was Peter Harrison, who prepared a design around 1740. During construction, the building briefly served as an emergency hospital during a yellow fever epidemic. The cathedral was consecrated in 1838, with Queen Adelaide, the widow of King William IV, in attendance. It officially became a cathedral in 1842 with the creation of the Diocese of Gibraltar. The cathedral has faced challenges throughout its history. It suffered damage during the explosion of the RFA Bedenham in 1951, which lifted the roof and shattered the stained glass. The windows were replaced, and the gathered fragments of colored glass were used to create the stained glass window in the east wall. A stone from Coventry Cathedral, which was ruined in the Blitz, is embedded in the wall behind the baptismal font. Today, the Holy Trinity Cathedral stands as a vibrant center for the Anglican community in Gibraltar, welcoming visitors and hosting regular services.
