Discover more about North Bastion

The North Bastion, originally named Baluarte San Pablo (St. Paul's Bastion), is a significant historical landmark in Gibraltar, serving as a crucial element in the peninsula's defenses against attacks from mainland Spain. Its foundations are rooted in the old Giralda tower, constructed in 1309. Over the centuries, this bastion has been a silent witness to numerous sieges and battles, embodying the strategic military importance of Gibraltar. Commissioned by King Philip II in the mid-16th century, the Lombardian military engineer Giovan Giacomo Paleari Fratino transformed the existing Giralda Tower into a robust bastion. This conversion was part of a broader effort to enhance the Rock's defenses, recognizing Gibraltar's vulnerability as the gateway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The bastion's design facilitated flanking fire across the causeway towards Spain, covering the old Saint Bernard's Wall (Grand Battery) and approaches to the Landport Gate. Throughout its history, the North Bastion has undergone several modifications and enhancements. The British, after capturing Gibraltar in 1704, further fortified the bastion, recognizing its pivotal role in defending the territory. They mounted guns along the land front curtain wall, calling it the Grand Battery, and added more guns on the old mole extending into the sea near the North Bastion. Today, the bastion is surrounded by reclaimed land, with Glacis Road running along its former glacis. Smith Dorrien Avenue separates the bastion from the curtain wall, which remains largely intact. Visitors to the North Bastion can explore its well-preserved structure, which reflects the military architecture of the time. The site is now home to the Giralda Gardens and a pétanque club, offering a blend of historical exploration and recreational activities. The Government of Gibraltar has expressed interest in improving access to the Northern Defences, with proposals to link the site to other fortifications as tourist attractions.
