Situated in the bustling John Mackintosh Square, the building itself has a rich history, originally constructed in 1817 through public subscription to house the Exchange and Commercial Library. This was the first prominent representative body of civilians pursuing civil rights in a predominantly fortress environment.Over the years, the building has evolved, becoming the Legislative Council in 1950 and later the House of Assembly in 1969. The 2006 Constitution marked a significant step, renaming it the Gibraltar Parliament and increasing its sovereignty, with all 17 members now elected. The Parliament is the foundation of the sovereignty of Gibraltarians.Today, the Gibraltar Parliament continues to operate as the legislative body, addressing the issues that impact the local community.
