The Royal Engineers' Monument is a captivating sculpture that pays tribute to the remarkable history and contributions of the Royal Engineers in Gibraltar. Presented to the people of Gibraltar by the Corps of Royal Engineers, it commemorates their continuous service on the Rock of Gibraltar from 1704, and the formation in 1772 of the first Body of Soldiers of the Corps, then known as the Company of Royal Artificers. The monument was erected on Main Street on March 26, 1994.The bronze statue honors all of their contributions to the defense of Gibraltar. Among their biggest accomplishments was the construction of the King's Bastion. During the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779 – 1783), they tunneled through the Rock of Gibraltar so cannons could better destroy the advancing Spanish troops. In 1787, they were granted the Royal designation and became the Corps of Royal Engineers.Located on Main Street, the monument is surrounded by a vibrant atmosphere with shops, cafes, and cultural experiences. It provides an excellent vantage point for photographs, allowing tourists to capture the essence of this historical landmark against the backdrop of the Mediterranean landscape. The Royal Engineers' Monument is not just a piece of art but a significant symbol of the military heritage of the region.
