Discover more about British War Memorial

The British War Memorial, also known as the Gibraltar War Memorial, is a monument commemorating those who fell during the First World War. Sculpted from Carrara marble by Jose Piquet Catoli of Barcelona, Spain, it depicts a sailor and a soldier jointly raising the British flag and a laurel wreath. The memorial was unveiled on September 27, 1923, by the Governor of Gibraltar, Sir Charles Monro. The memorial is located on an esplanade with steps, west of the City Hall in John Mackintosh Square. Plaques on the memorial pay tribute to the heroes of Gibraltar and the Straits Patrol. The esplanade also features two Russian cannons captured during the Crimean War (1854–1856), which were presented to Gibraltar by the British government in 1858 for its assistance during the conflict. Two additional cannons are located at the entrance to the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens. The memorial serves as a gathering place for ceremonies and commemorative events, connecting Gibraltar's past with the present. It is a place for both locals and tourists to engage with Gibraltar's history and pay tribute to those who shaped its narrative.
