Discover more about Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps present a unique and demanding hiking experience within the Upper Rock Nature Reserve in Gibraltar. Carved into the Rock's eastern face, this historic path was originally constructed by the British military in the 18th century to access strategic defense posts. Today, it serves as a thrilling pedestrian route for those seeking panoramic views and a challenging workout. The ascent begins at Jew's Gate, approximately 180 meters above sea level, and climbs to O'Hara's Battery, near the Rock's summit at 419 meters. The trail winds along the cliff edge, offering breathtaking vistas of the Mediterranean Sea, the Spanish Costa del Sol, and the Rif Mountains of North Africa. Along the way, hikers encounter remnants of military installations, including World War II fortifications and gun emplacements, providing a glimpse into Gibraltar's strategic past. The path is steep and rugged, with uneven stone steps and rocky terrain. While the 2007 restoration improved safety with sturdy rope handrails in particularly steep sections, the hike remains challenging and is not recommended for those with a fear of heights or limited physical fitness. The diverse flora and fauna of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve add to the experience, with opportunities to spot migratory birds, wildflowers, and even the famous Barbary macaques. Points of interest along the route include the Goat's Hair Twin Caves, once sea caves and evidence of prehistoric human habitation, and Spider Cave, a small hollow used during WWII. The final stretch involves a strenuous climb to the summit, where Lord Airey's and O'Hara's Batteries offer commanding views and a sense of accomplishment.
