Discover more about Devil's Gap Battery

Devil's Gap Battery, aptly named by the Spanish as 'Punta del Diablo' or Devil's Point, is a historic coastal battery in Gibraltar that stands as a testament to the territory's strategic military importance. Positioned on the escarpment above the city, near the western edge of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, the battery boasts an elevation of 130 meters (430 ft) above sea level, providing commanding views across the Bay of Gibraltar.Originally utilized during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783), the battery was significantly upgraded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1902, two BL 6-inch Mk VII naval guns were installed, playing a crucial role in coastal defense. Notably, in August 1917, one of these guns successfully sank a German submarine during World War I, marking a significant moment in Gibraltar's military history. The battery remained active until 1954.Today, Devil's Gap Battery is maintained by volunteers on behalf of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and is a Class A listed building. Visitors can explore the site, examine the preserved guns and fortifications, and delve into the underground complex with its storage areas and ammunition magazines. The battery not only offers a fascinating insight into British military engineering but also provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and sightseers alike.
