    Discover more about Mediterranean Steps

The Mediterranean Steps is a nature trail and footpath that zigzags up the Rock of Gibraltar, offering a unique blend of historical significance and natural beauty. Constructed by the British military in the 18th century, the steps were part of a communication system providing access to various defense posts at the southern end of the Rock. Today, they serve as a challenging hiking route for locals and tourists alike, linking Martin's Path to Lord Airey's Battery near the summit. The ascent begins at Jews' Gate, approximately 180 meters above sea level, and climbs to over 425 meters at the highest point near O'Hara's Battery. Along the way, hikers are treated to breathtaking views of the Strait of Gibraltar, Windmill Hill, Europa Point, and the coastlines of Spain and Morocco. The path winds along the eastern side of the Rock, characterized by cliffs and Mediterranean scrub. The trail passes several historical and geological points of interest. Goat's Hair Twin Caves, once sea caves, showcase the dramatic changes in sea level over time. Remnants of World War II fortifications, including a derelict pre-war tunnel and pumping station, add a layer of historical context to the natural surroundings. The Mediterranean Steps were restored in 2007, making the route safer, though it remains a strenuous hike not suitable for those with a fear of heights or those in poor physical condition. The effort is well worth it, as the summit offers unparalleled views and a sense of accomplishment.
