The Mediterranean Steps, carved into Gibraltar's eastern cliffs, offer a challenging yet rewarding hike through history and stunning scenery. Originally built by the British military in the 18th century, these steps provide access to former defense posts, combining physical exertion with panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, Spain, and Morocco.

Walking
From Casemates Square, walk south along Main Street. Continue past the Grand Parade car park and follow Europa Road, bearing right onto Engineer Road. Proceed until you reach the Pillars of Hercules and the entrance to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. The ticket office is located near the Pillars of Hercules. Purchase a ticket for the Nature Reserve, which includes access to the Mediterranean Steps. From the ticket office, the Mediterranean Steps are a short walk away. Note: This is a strenuous uphill walk of approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) from the car park to the start of the steps. Cost: £19 for adults, £13 for children (ages 3-11).
Public Transport
From the Gibraltar International Airport or the city center, take a bus to Europa Point. The Gibraltar Bus Company operates several routes that serve this area. From Europa Point, walk north along Europa Road towards the Pillars of Hercules, where the Mediterranean Steps begin. Cost: A single bus fare within Gibraltar typically costs around £2. A day pass offering unlimited travel is also available.
Taxi
Taxis are readily available throughout Gibraltar, including at the airport, border crossing, and Casemates Square. A taxi to the Pillars of Hercules, near the start of the Mediterranean Steps, will typically take 10-15 minutes from the city center. Cost: A short taxi ride within Gibraltar typically costs £5-£10, plus the entry fee for the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.
