Discover more about O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery, located at the highest point on the Rock of Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's enduring military heritage. Named after General Charles O'Hara, Governor of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, the battery sits at an elevation of 421 meters (1,383 feet) near the southern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. Originally, the site was intended to be a watchtower, known as O'Hara's Folly, to monitor enemy activity in Cadiz. However, the tower failed to meet its intended purpose. In 1890, the current battery was constructed. Over the years, the battery was equipped with various artillery pieces, including a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun installed in 1901, capable of striking targets up to 16 miles away. The battery played a defensive role during both World War I and World War II. It last fired during training exercises in 1976. Today, O'Hara's Battery has been refurbished and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the gun emplacements, observation points, and underground chambers, gaining insights into Gibraltar's military past. The site offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the North African coast.
