Discover more about Catalan Bay

Catalan Bay, nestled on the eastern coast of Gibraltar, offers a delightful escape with its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Known locally as 'La Caleta,' this picturesque village boasts a vibrant atmosphere with colorful houses cascading down the hillside towards a sandy beach. Historically, Catalan Bay was primarily populated by Genoese fishermen during the 17th and 18th centuries. Genoese was the spoken language well into the 19th century. The village's name is believed to originate from a group of 350 Catalan servicemen who assisted the Anglo-Dutch forces in capturing Gibraltar in 1704. Today, many families in Catalan Bay are direct descendants of these original Genoese fishermen, known as 'Caleteños'. The beach at Catalan Bay is the second largest sandy beach in Gibraltar and a major draw, offering clear waters for swimming and sunbathing. Visitors can enjoy a variety of water sports or simply relax on the sands. The village is also home to the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, where each September, a statue of the Virgin is carried to the beach, and the Bishop of Gibraltar blesses the sea. This lively festival is a significant religious event for the village. Catalan Bay offers a unique and relaxing experience by the sea, where visitors can also enjoy fresh seafood by the shore. Despite its increasing popularity with tourists, Catalan Bay has retained its authentic charm and strong sense of community. The village's traditional seafood restaurants, narrow streets, and colorful houses create a welcoming atmosphere.
