Discover more about Devil's Gap Battery

Devil's Gap Battery, situated on the escarpment above Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's strategic military history. At 130 meters (430 ft) above sea level, it offers commanding views of the Bay of Gibraltar. Originally called Punta del Diablo (Devil's Point) by the Spanish, the battery has evolved through several iterations since the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783).Initially armed with mortars, the battery was upgraded in 1881 with two RML 9-inch 12-ton guns. By 1902, these were replaced with two BL 6-inch Mk VII naval guns, which remained in place until 1954. During World War I, one of these guns famously sank a German submarine in 1917. The battery was also manned during the Spanish Civil War in 1936.Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved site, including the gun emplacements and underground magazines. The site is maintained by volunteers on behalf of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust and is a Class A listed building. Devil's Gap Battery provides not only a historical experience but also breathtaking views, making it a must-see destination for history buffs and sightseers alike.
