Gibraltar Botanic Gardens: A Green Oasis

The Gibraltar Botanic Gardens, or La Alameda Gardens, have been a part of Gibraltar's heritage for over two centuries. Founded in 1816 by Lieutenant-Governor Sir George Don, the gardens provided a recreational area for soldiers and residents seeking respite from the heat. The gardens fell into disrepair in the 1970s but were revitalized in 1991, expanding its role to include education, research, and conservation.The gardens span approximately 6 hectares (15 acres) and feature a mix of native and imported plant species adapted to the Mediterranean climate. Visitors can explore themed beds showcasing plants from regions with similar climates, such as California, Australia, South Africa, and the Canary Islands. The gardens also house a notable collection of palm trees and cacti.Within the gardens, the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park provides a sanctuary for rescued animals. The park plays a crucial role in educating the public about endangered species and environmental protection. The gardens also feature historical monuments, including the Eliott Memorial, commemorating Governor George Augustus Eliott. A bronze sculpture of James Joyce's Molly Bloom adds a cultural touch.The gardens are open daily from 8 am to sunset and offer free admission. Guided tours are available by appointment, providing detailed information on plant species and historical facts. The gardens also serve as a venue for cultural events, with an open-air theatre hosting live performances.
