    Discover more about Gorham's Cave

Gorham's Cave, nestled on the southeastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar, is more than just a cave; it's a portal into the world of Neanderthals and early modern humans. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, part of the Gorham's Cave Complex, comprises four caves offering exceptional testimony to the occupation, cultural traditions, and material culture of these populations over approximately 120,000 years.Named after Captain A. Gorham, who discovered it in 1907, the cave has since become a focal point for understanding human evolution and adaptation. Archaeological excavations have revealed a wealth of information about Neanderthal life, including their diet, tools, and environment. The cave's strategic location near the Mediterranean Sea provided access to diverse food resources, as evidenced by the remains of birds, marine animals, and shellfish found within its depths. The cave's significance extends beyond its archaeological treasures. A rock engraving discovered within Gorham's Cave suggests the Neanderthals' capacity for abstract thought, challenging previous assumptions about their cognitive abilities. The complex also contains evidence of early modern human occupation, indicating a continuous human presence in the area until approximately 1800 BCE.While access to the cave's interior is restricted to protect its fragile deposits, visitors can still experience the site's grandeur from the Europa Advance Batteries Viewing Platform. This platform offers panoramic views of the cave complex, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Strait of Gibraltar, providing a unique perspective on the Neanderthal landscape. Interpretation panels at the viewing platform offer insights into the site's history, geology, and significance.
