Discover more about Harding's Battery

Harding's Battery, perched at Europa Point, stands as a testament to Gibraltar's strategic military importance throughout history. Originally constructed on the site of the 7th Europa Battery in 1859, it was named in honor of Sir George Harding, the Chief Engineer of Gibraltar in 1844. Initially armed with two 24-pounder cannons, the battery was upgraded in 1863 to two 32-pounder cannons. Following a survey by Colonel William Jervois in 1868, Harding's Battery was modified to accommodate heavy Rifle Muzzle Loading (RML) guns. Although the initial plan was to install a 9-inch RML on a Moncrieff disappearing mounting, it was never implemented. Instead, in 1877, work began to reconstruct the battery for a 12.5-inch RML on a barbette mounting, which was completed in 1878. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved gun emplacement and the Europa Sunken Magazine, which has been transformed into a visitor center. The magazine houses displays providing information on the battery's history and the wider story of Gibraltar's fortifications. The 12.5-inch RML gun on display was originally used at Alexandra's Battery and was moved to Harding's Battery in 2013. The battery offers panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Rif Mountains of Morocco on clear days.
