North Bastion: Gibraltar's Historic Northern Gateway

The North Bastion, historically known as Baluarte San Pablo (St. Paul's Bastion), is a significant element of Gibraltar's defensive structures, positioned at the northern end of the peninsula. Its primary role was to safeguard the town from potential invasions originating from mainland Spain.The bastion's origins can be traced back to the Giralda tower, constructed in 1309. Over time, rulers recognized its strategic importance and reinforced it. Following the British capture of Gibraltar in 1704, they further enhanced these fortifications, including flooding the land in front and converting the curtain wall into the Grand Battery.Today, the North Bastion is surrounded by reclaimed land. Smith Dorrien Avenue separates the bastion from the curtain wall, which remains largely intact. The site is currently occupied by the Giralda Gardens and a pétanque club. The Government of Gibraltar intends to rehabilitate the area as a tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the well-preserved structure, appreciate the views, and learn about the bastion's role in Gibraltar's military history.
