South Bastion, located at the southern end of the Line Wall Curtain, is a significant historical landmark in Gibraltar, embodying centuries of military history and architectural evolution. Constructed initially around 1540 under the reign of Emperor Charles V, it was designed by Benedetto da Ravenna, although some sources suggest Giovanni Battista Calvi may have been more influential in its design. The bastion, called the Baluarte de Nuestra Señora del Rosario by the Spanish, was named after the hermitage of Our Lady of the Rosary.Strategically positioned to defend the town from attacks from the Bay of Gibraltar, the South Bastion was later improved by the British, who recognized its importance following their capture of Gibraltar in 1704. In 1757, Lord Tyrawley reinforced the southern face, addressing its weakest point. The bastion's design incorporated casemated gun positions that enfiladed the ditch across the Gate of Africa, now the Southport Gate, demonstrating advanced military engineering for the time.Today, South Bastion not only serves as a historical site but also houses the Gibraltar College. Visitors can explore its ramparts, discover informative displays detailing its history, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding waters and distant African shores. A statue of Horatio Nelson stands near the bastion, commemorating his victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar.
