St. Jago's Arch is a relic of Gibraltar's Spanish past, serving as the original entrance to the Hermitage of Our Lady of the Rosary, a 16th-century Spanish church. The ornate sandstone arch features Renaissance-style architecture, including elegant fluted columns and rosette symbols.Following the British capture of Gibraltar in 1704, the church was converted into military stores. While most of the original structure was demolished in 1883 to construct the Royal Engineers Barracks (later St. Jago's Barracks), the western facade containing the arch was preserved and incorporated into the new building. Over the years, the barracks housed St. Jago's School and later the Income Tax Department.Today, St. Jago's Arch stands as a testament to Gibraltar's layered history and strategic importance. It is a Category B Listed Structure, recognized for its historical and architectural value. The arch is located near the bustling Trafalgar Road, offering visitors a chance to explore local shops and cafes.
