Trafalgar Cemetery, a historical landmark in Gibraltar, provides a serene and reflective experience for visitors. Originally known as Southport Ditch Cemetery, it was consecrated in 1798, predating the famed Battle of Trafalgar. Despite its name, only two casualties from the 1805 battle are buried here; most of the fallen were buried at sea. The cemetery primarily serves as the final resting place for those who died in other sea battles and the yellow fever epidemics that struck Gibraltar between 1804 and 1814. Walking through the grounds, you'll encounter over 500 graves, mostly belonging to British sailors and officers, each with its own story etched in stone. The oldest tombstone dates back to 1738.The site fell into disuse after 1814 but was restored in the 1980s. In 1992, a memorial to the Battle of Trafalgar was erected. Today, the cemetery is the location of an annual commemorative ceremony held on the Sunday closest to Trafalgar Day, marking the anniversary of the battle. The grounds feature diverse tree species, including Gibraltar's only Sweet Chestnut. The cemetery is bordered by the Charles V Wall, Prince Edward's Road, and Trafalgar Road.
