Discover more about Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege Tunnels, located within the northern end of the Rock of Gibraltar, stand as a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the British military during the Great Siege of 1779-1783. Faced with a combined Spanish and French force attempting to recapture Gibraltar, the British defenders carved these tunnels out of solid limestone to create protected passages and strategic gun positions. The tunnels were initially created to allow the British to target Spanish batteries and siege works on the narrow land approach to Gibraltar. The work was carried out by British soldiers and local civilians using hand tools and explosives. The conditions were harsh, with workers facing suffocating heat, smoke, dust, and the constant danger of collapse or explosion. Despite these challenges, the tunnellers persevered, creating a network of tunnels that stretched for several kilometers inside the Rock.As you walk through the tunnels, you'll discover various chambers and passageways, each telling a different part of Gibraltar's military past. Cannons are still positioned overlooking the landscapes they once defended. Informational panels provide historical background and technical explanations. The tunnels were expanded after the siege and were used again during World War II. Today, the Great Siege Tunnels serve as a living museum, offering visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the strategic importance and resilience of Gibraltar.
