Discover more about O'Hara's Battery

O'Hara's Battery, located at the highest point on the Rock of Gibraltar, stands as a testament to the territory's enduring military heritage. Named after General Charles O'Hara, Governor of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, the site initially housed a watchtower known as O'Hara's Folly, intended for observing the Spanish port of Cadiz. Constructed in 1890, the battery was equipped with a 6-inch breech-loading gun, later replaced in 1901 by a 9.2-inch Mark X BL gun capable of striking targets 16 miles away. This strategic positioning allowed for monitoring and repelling hostile naval forces. The battery played a crucial role in Gibraltar's defense during both World War I and World War II, remaining in service until 1976. Today, O'Hara's Battery has been meticulously restored and opened to the public in 2010. Visitors can explore the gun emplacements, underground chambers, and connecting tunnels, gaining insight into the lives of the soldiers who served here. The site offers stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, the Strait of Gibraltar, and the North African coastline.
