Getting There

  • Walking

    If you are within the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, you can walk to Devil's Gap Battery. From the entrance of the reserve, follow the path marked towards the battery. The route is well-signposted and takes approximately 30 minutes uphill. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, especially on warm days.

  • Public Transport

    From Gibraltar's city center, take bus number 2 or 3 towards the Upper Rock area. Get off at the stop closest to the nature reserve entrance. From there, follow the signs for 'Devil's Gap Battery'. The walk to the battery will take around 20 minutes and is mostly uphill. A single bus journey typically costs around £2.

  • Car

    If driving, navigate to Gibraltar Nature Reserve. From the entrance at the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, head towards the main road leading to the city center. Follow signs for 'Devil's Gap Battery' or 'Green Lane'. Parking is limited near the battery; consider parking at the nearby Upper Rock Nature Reserve car park and walking the remaining distance, approximately 15 minutes. Parking fees at Devil's Tower Road Car Park are free for one hour.

Nestled within Gibraltar's scenic landscape, Devil's Gap Battery offers a captivating journey back to the era of military fortifications. Constructed in the late 19th century as part of British defenses, the battery played a crucial role in safeguarding the territory. Today, it stands as a monument to Gibraltar's rich military history, drawing tourists eager to explore its past and enjoy breathtaking views. Perched on the escarpment above the city, approximately 130 meters (430 ft) above sea level, Devil's Gap Battery offers stunning vistas of the Bay of Gibraltar. The battery itself is well-preserved, featuring remnants of old cannons and fortifications that allow visitors to imagine its strategic importance during times of conflict. The site includes underground magazines, shelters, and shell hoisting mechanisms, showcasing British military engineering. Devil's Gap Battery was armed with two 6-inch Mark VII naval guns. In August 1917, one of the guns sank a German submarine traveling on the surface near Algeciras, marking the only action seen by Gibraltar's coastal defenses during World War I. The battery ceased its role of close defense examination in 1954, but the guns remain in position. Maintained by volunteers on behalf of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, the battery is a Class A listed building.
