Discover more about Gorham's Cave

Gorham's Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, is located on the southeastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar. This sea-level cave is more than just a geological formation; it's a window into the lives of Neanderthals and early modern humans who inhabited the area for over 120,000 years. The Gorham's Cave Complex comprises four caves: Gorham's Cave, Vanguard Cave, Hyaena Cave, and Bennett's Cave. The cave is named after Captain A. Gorham of the 2nd Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, who discovered it in 1907 while opening a fissure at the rear of a sea cavern. He inscribed his name and the date of his discovery on the cave wall. Excavations in the early 1950s revealed its archaeological significance, uncovering Mousterian stone tools made by Neanderthals and a variety of animal bones. These findings confirmed the cave as a significant site of Neanderthal occupation. The site is the last recorded place of Neanderthal occupation in the world. Today, visitors can explore the cave's viewing platform and interpretation center to learn about its rich history and significance. While access to the cave's interior is restricted to protect the fragile archaeological deposits, guided tours to the entrance of Gorham's Cave are available. The cave complex is within the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, offering a blend of natural beauty and historical intrigue.
