Discover more about Hayne's Cave Battery

Hayne's Cave Battery is a historical site in Gibraltar that showcases the region's military heritage. The battery, named after Captain Haynes, a garrison quartermaster, was initially constructed in 1788, with modifications made in 1903. It is positioned on the western side of Gibraltar at Hayne's Cave, offering strategic views. Visitors to Hayne's Cave Battery can explore the remnants of two gun emplacements that formed the artillery battery. These emplacements were initially equipped with 4-inch QF guns in 1904, which were later replaced by more powerful 6-inch guns at Tovey Battery in 1911. The cave itself was repurposed to hold water tanks and pumps. Today, the derelict battery is accessible via Royal Anglian Way, named in honor of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Anglian Regiment, who renovated the area in 1969. The path leading to the battery also passes by military support buildings and Rooke Battery. Exploring Hayne's Cave Battery combines scenic beauty with historical insight, providing a unique perspective on Gibraltar's strategic importance.
