While its exact construction date remains unknown, references to it appear in documents from the mid-1700s. During this time, John Mackintosh Square was a parade ground known as The Parade. The Main Guard is marked on a 1750 plan as the 'Main Guard Room'.Its location near King's Bastion led to significant damage during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (1779-1783). The second story was likely added during reconstruction. Throughout its history, the Main Guard has served multiple functions. It was a guardhouse, a fire station, a bathhouse, and government offices. Since 2001, it has been the headquarters of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust.Today, the Main Guard provides a glimpse into Gibraltar's past. Its architecture reflects the Georgian style of the era.
