    Getting There

    Walking

    If you are coming from the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, follow the well-signposted path towards Devil's Gap Battery. The walk is approximately 30 minutes uphill, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. From the Devil's Gap Footpath, the path commences at the eastern boundary of the Upper Town at the junction of Devil's Gap Road with Baca's Passage. It proceeds in a mostly southerly direction before reaching a flight of steps which link it to Green Lane, the road leading to Devil's Gap Battery. There are no costs associated with walking to the battery.

    Public Transport

    From the city center, take Bus 2 or 3 towards the Upper Rock area. Get off at the stop closest to the Nature Reserve entrance. From there, follow the signs for 'Devil's Gap Battery'. The walk to the battery will take around 20 minutes and is mostly uphill. A single bus journey typically costs around £2.

    Car

    Navigate to Gibraltar Nature Reserve. From the entrance at the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, head towards the main road leading to the city center. Follow signs for 'Devil's Gap Battery' or 'Green Lane'. Parking is limited near the battery; consider parking at the nearby Upper Rock Nature Reserve car park and walking the remaining distance, approximately 15 minutes. Parking fees vary, but expect to pay around £2-£3 per hour.

    Nestled within Gibraltar's scenic landscape, Devil's Gap Battery is a captivating historical site that transports visitors back to the era of military defense. Constructed in the late 19th century, the battery played a vital role in safeguarding British territory. Called Punta del Diablo (Devil's Point) by the Spanish, it stands on the escarpment above the city, offering views across the bay at 130 meters above sea level.Visitors can explore the well-preserved remnants of old cannons and fortifications, imagining the battery's strategic importance during past conflicts. The site features gun emplacements and observation points that provide panoramic views. Walking paths guide you through the area, making it accessible for history buffs and families alike.In 1878, two RML 9-inch 12-ton guns were proposed and installed at the battery, but later dismounted in 1900. In 1902, two BL 6-inch Mk VII naval guns were installed, with magazines and shelters added in 1903. During World War I, one of the guns sank a German submarine traveling on the surface close to Algeciras. The battery ceased its role of close defense examination in 1954, but the 6-inch guns remain in position.Today, Devil's Gap Battery is a testament to Gibraltar's military history, drawing tourists eager to explore its past and enjoy the stunning views. Recent plans have been filed to refurbish the battery and make it a functional hub for visitors to the Nature Reserve.
