Discover more about Apes Den

Apes' Den is a renowned attraction within the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, famous for its lively community of Barbary macaques. These fascinating primates, often mistakenly called apes due to their tailless nature, are actually monkeys and are Europe's only wild monkey population. Observing the macaques in their natural environment, as they groom, play, and forage, provides a unique and memorable experience for visitors of all ages. The Apes' Den isn't a den in the traditional sense, but rather an open area where the macaques have established their home. The location offers stunning panoramic views of the Rock of Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea. The troop residing here is known as the Queen's Gate group, and they are known to be inquisitive and opportunistic. Legend has it that the macaques' presence on the Rock dates back to the early days of the British Garrison. Superstition holds that should the macaques ever disappear from Gibraltar, the British will leave as well. During World War II, when the macaque population dwindled, Winston Churchill himself ordered reinforcements to be brought in from North Africa. While the monkeys may seem tame, it's important to remember that they are wild animals. Visitors are strongly advised not to approach, feed, or touch them. It is illegal to interfere with the macaques, and they may bite or scratch if frightened or upset. Enjoy watching these fascinating creatures from a safe distance and allow them to live a natural, free life.
