Discover more about Catalan Bay

Catalan Bay, nestled on the eastern coast of Gibraltar, is more than just a beach; it's a vibrant slice of Mediterranean life. Known locally as La Caleta, this picturesque bay boasts a rich history, with its roots as a fishing village dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally populated by Genoese fishermen, the village retains much of its authentic charm, with colorful houses lining the sandy beach, creating a stunning visual. The origin of the name 'Catalan Bay' is debated, with one theory suggesting it honors Catalan servicemen who assisted in the capture of Gibraltar in 1704. Regardless of its name's true source, the village has long been a hub for fishing and coastal traditions. For a time, only fishermen with permits were allowed to live here, and many current residents are descendants of those original families, known as 'Caleteños'. Today, Catalan Bay offers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, a welcome contrast to the bustling town center. Visitors can enjoy swimming in the clear waters, sunbathing on the beach, and savoring fresh seafood at the local restaurants. The village is also home to the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, where a statue is carried to the beach each September for the Blessing of the Sea, a significant religious festival. Catalan Bay provides a unique cultural experience and a beautiful setting to unwind and appreciate the beauty of Gibraltar's coastline.
