Discover more about Europa Point Lighthouse

Europa Point Lighthouse, a beacon of maritime history, stands tall at the southernmost point of Gibraltar. Constructed in 1841 and also known as the Trinity Lighthouse, it has been a guiding light for vessels navigating the busy Strait of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. The lighthouse is operated by Trinity House, making it the only such building managed by them outside of the British Isles. Originally, the lighthouse used a single-wick oil lamp, but it underwent several upgrades over the years to improve its light and capabilities. These included the introduction of multi-wick burners, improved lenses, and eventually an electrically operated lighting system. In 1994, the lighthouse was fully automated, and in 2016, it was converted to LED operation. Today, visitors can admire the lighthouse's classic British design and enjoy panoramic views of the Strait of Gibraltar, the African coastline, and the Rock of Gibraltar itself. Europa Point also features other attractions, including the Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, a Christian chapel, and the Sikorski Memorial, commemorating a 1943 plane crash. The area is a popular spot for birdwatching, offering a blend of history, natural beauty, and breathtaking views.
