O'Hara's Battery, located at the highest point of the Rock of Gibraltar, is a historic artillery battery that offers visitors a unique blend of military history and breathtaking views. Named after General Charles O'Hara, Governor of Gibraltar in the late 18th century, the battery stands at 421 meters (1,383 feet) above sea level, near the southern end of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve.Originally the site of a watchtower known as O'Hara's Folly, the battery was constructed in 1890 to defend the Strait of Gibraltar. The first gun, a 6-inch breech-loading gun, was installed that year, later replaced in 1901 by a 9.2 inch Mark X BL gun with a range of 16 miles (25.7 kms). This powerful gun played a crucial role in Gibraltar's defense, capable of striking targets as far as the African coast. The battery remained active during World War II and was last fired in training exercises in 1976.Today, O'Hara's Battery has been refurbished and opened to the public, offering a glimpse into Gibraltar's military past.
