Discover more about Parson's Lodge Battery

Parson's Lodge Battery, perched on a rocky promontory between Rosia Bay and Camp Bay, is a testament to Gibraltar's strategic military history. Originally named the 9th Rosia Battery, its name was first recorded in 1761. The name likely refers to the dwelling of the parson of a church and hermitage named St. John the Green. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the battery was upgraded and armed with various guns to protect Rosia Bay, a vital landing place for supplies. In 1842, major upgrades were made, and by 1873, the battery was adapted to house three 10-inch Rifled Muzzle Loaders. The battery played a significant role in both World Wars, equipped with anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns. Today, after extensive restoration by the Gibraltar Heritage Trust in 1994, Parson's Lodge Battery functions as a museum, showcasing its history through exhibits and preserved structures. Visitors can explore the gun emplacements, underground tunnels, and living quarters while enjoying the stunning views of the coastline. The site provides insights into the lives of soldiers stationed here and the evolution of military technology.
